Sheets and pillowcases urgently needed

Project Jonah Stranding Advice Basic First Aid 5

3 December 2011

With whale stranding season already underway, we’re looking for essential supplies to stock our emergency trailers up and down the country.

While specialised equipment can be expensive, some of the things that can make a real difference don’t cost anything.

Everyday items that you’re getting ready to throw out could be part of our critical life-saving kit.  So just hang fire before you clear out your cupboards or garden shed.

We need light-coloured bed sheets, pillowcases, garden trowels and spades.

“Sheets are needed to protect a whale’s sensitive skin from the sun and wind. Pillowcases can be used as makeshift sandbags to help keep the whales upright, and spades and trowels make light work of shifting sand,” says Project Jonah CEO Kimberly Muncaster.

Following a busy stranding season last year, our stocks are low and we need to prepare for the emergencies that lie ahead.

You can drop-off your items at Dulux trade centres nationwide and at selected Department of Conservation offices.

“At this time of year we’re desperate for supplies that many people would discard as rubbish. Saving whales costs a lot of money so we save wherever we can. We want people to understand that the things they no longer want, might be the things we really need. In short, your junk might just be our treasure,” says Muncaster.
