16/01/2014 - Stranding update: Mass Stranding Farewell Spit
Despite more than two days of significant effort by the Department of Conservation, Project Jonah volunteers and the local community caring for re-floating and attempting to herd the remaining pilot whales back to deep water using boats and people in the water, the survivors of Tuesdays pilot whale stranding in Golden Bay having been joined by a 9th whale, have again re-stranded overnight.

Around 8am this morning, Department of Conservation staff were alerted to approximately 50 pilot whales close to shore off Taupata Point, on Farewell Spit. Project Jonah Marine Mammal Medics have been mobilised. Read more...
