Say No to Offshore Drilling![]() Please take action. Sign our petition today. Three major oil spills have occurred around the world over the last year and the recent Rena Spill in Tauranga gives us a taste of what could come if we open up our waters to offshore oil drilling. New Zealand's coastline and ocean waters are too valuable to risk a disaster like the BP oil spill which has devastated the Gulf of Mexico. Sadly, the impacts of this spill will be felt for years to come and will have a devastating impact on our oceans; oceans whales and dolphins depend on to survive. Yet the New Zealand Government has already given oil companies permission to start dangerous deep sea oil exploration off the East Coast of the North Island, and tagged many other areas for exploitation. As soon as next year oil companies could start drilling at depths of up to 3000 metres. An accident at this extreme depth would be almost impossible to fix. We believe this is a move in the wrong direction for New Zealand. Expansion of new offshore drilling in our oceans threatens marine life and our delicate eco-system, not to mention our clean, green reputation. Our Government is struggling to understand the urgent need for a new economic vision; one that promotes renewable energy. Let's help them see sense. Sign our petition today. |
